About book Nel Mare Ci Sono I Coccodrilli: Storia Vera Di Enaiatollah Akbari (2010)

This was an amazing little book that made me laugh and cry, and it always fascinates me to learn of the difficulties that people deal with in other countries. It makes me grateful to live here, I know I take my freedom for granted. Then I read a book about a 10 year old boy going through what this boy went through, and my complacency embarrasses me. I would highly recommend this book, some of the reviews say it is for young adults, but I found it inspiring. I really enjoyed it. It was very clear, simply written book. The pace was quick without being hurried and kept the tone of the authors age (both at the time it occurred as well as at the time of telling) very nicely. There were several instances where his stark observances were very moving. The one I remember most clearly is "...without school, life is like ashes." Of course, I can easily substitute 'books' or 'education' for school. Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to have information of all kinds at my fingertips all the time. Things like this make me deeply grateful.Although completely dissimilar in presentation, in tone and purpose, it reminds me a of Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi (also a great read).I'm going to try and get my teenage nephews to read it. The candid viewpoint of a boy from a different background would be good for them. Maybe they'll even be interested since it's true =]
