About book Nearing Home: Life, Faith, And Finishing Well (2000)
How do you prepare for unexpected twists and turns of getting older and do you like growing older? Do you or someone you know is now facing infirmities and uncertainties that are a part of this maturing process? I can relate to these timely questions and thought of so many dear people that surround my life with these same thoughts and feelings. Billy's writings encourage and inspire us to live bravely in the midst of difficulty and shows us how to be content.Throughout the pages of the book perspectives on life and faith are sprinkled through the ten chapters. The author focuses on "old" as genuine, valuable and beautiful. God used so many people in the Bible in their later years. Are you willing to be used by God regardless of being bound by physical ailments, financial constraints or the loneliness of growing old?As a grandma of five, I heard a repeated theme or call if you will, to invest the fruit of your experience in the lives of others. Billy Graham is passionate about legacy and leading other generations by example. Life is a journey of many steps and growing older is a gradual process. Burdens and disabilities become our companions. Are you willing to be used by God? I love the book and plan to get copies for gift giving. Get the book, you'll be blessed. Billy Graham published "Nearing Home: Life, Faith and Finishing Well" two years ago when he was 92. Now at 94 he is even closer home and closer to joining his beloved Ruth and his friend George Beverly Shea who passed away this year.In Nearing Home, Graham talks about how it feels to get older, how it feels to lose the loved ones around you, how it feels to be in failing health, and yet he never loses hope. The book is a gentle read, not perhaps as strong as you might expect from someone known for his passionate evangelistic preaching. Rather it's a conversational piece where Graham speaks quietly and sincerely from the heart. What does it mean to finish well?Graham speaks plainly about what those who are reaching their later years can still do for the cause of the gospel, recounting how he told one woman who said all she could do was to pray that she was blessed because she was doing the most important thing. There are no eye opening theological proclamations in this book. No revealing stories, just the musings of a life well lived. In many ways reading "Nearing Home" is like having a private conversation with Graham, something most will never have the privilege to do. He speaks of how one minister drives weekly to have lunch with him and to share and what a blessing that is that someone would come and speak of the gospel with him. The observant reader will recognize that the younger pastor likewise feels that he is the one who is blessed to be able to sit in the presence of this servant of God.True to his nature, and to the passion that has driven him for so many years of ministry, Graham offers multiple opportunities for the non-believer to accept Christ, thus given them the opportunity to finish well.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program.
