About book Natsume's Book Of Friends, Volume 1 (2010)

Although I am not a big fan of fantasy, I still found this a very subtle and easy read.Natsume's book of friends is about a boy who can see yokai - mythical creatures sort of similar to spirits. This is probably not the most original or creative ideas for a story but the story is still quite nice. The second principle to the story is the 'book of friends' aspect. The book of friends is a collection of names belonging to the yokai. Whoever has control of the book has power over all the yokai whose names are in that book. Natsume, the protagonist has decided that he wishes to set the yokai free rather than control them. The art is absolutely gorgeous. Probably one of the best parts of the manga. It really sets the mood. Each of the yokai are differentiable and charming in appearance. This manga has only really introduced two main characters. Natsume is the main character who seems to be very plain and kind-hearted. I will look forward to more character development in further volumes. The other character is Nyanko-sensei; a yokai cat who has been promised the book of friends if Natsume ever dies. They are not lovable characters yet but certainly likeable. The manga is written in episodes - each chapter has a different storyline. I don't usually mind episodic manga but I feel as if in this circumstance, it would be nice for longer arcs.Natsume book of friends is a pleasant read. It is nothing special but just a nice read. An endearing episodic series of acceptance, friendship, and responsibility. Ever since he was young, Natsume has been plagued by yokai. He never knew why until the day he meets the yokai Nyanko Sensei, who reveals the traits he shares with his late grandmother Reiko. Between his own powers and his inheritance, the Book of Friends, Natsume suffers many problems. The yokai may hunt him, yet it is his own inner turmoil that troubles him most. Alone, and unable to connect with the people who can't understand him, he is fearful to become close. His curse may become his blessing though as he starts to return the names in the Book of Friends to their owners. For a character like Natsume, time and a steady pace is a requirement to let him develop naturally. Meaningful moments are regularly interspersed with action and even some light comedy. Many strange yokai appear at every point portrayed in a wispy-lined style. The mangaka masterfully uses negative space and screentones to establish a highly emotive effect. By exploring Reiko's past, Natsume learns of the importance of connections. His story, and the lessons he learns, leaves us with a warm feeling inside of our hearts.
