SUPER RAMBLY I DON'T KNOW WHERE I WAS GOING WITH THIS BUT BELIEVE ME THIS BOOK WAS GOOD.***Would not recommend if you have not read the Kushiel series. First book is called Kushiel's Dart.***I binge read this so fast.I've read Jacqueline's Kushiel series and I absolutely loved it like 2000%. It's one of my favourite series and made me more open minded about bad covers and nsfw scenes. This book is equally so. Her second series I did not finish due to my lacking interest but it did not mean her writing was bad...But there is a certain time and place where I can pick up big philosophical like fantasy books because I think and analyze and theorize...Uses up a lot of brain cells you know?And yeah, I thought now, meaning a couple weeks before my exams, was a good time as any to pick up a big book. Most would advise against it, but of course I had already committed myself to the deed. But I couldn't go back to the previous series. So I picked up this one....and I was sososo addicted. I mean it had like 90 chapters and without the background info that I guessed was explained in its predecessor, things were still unimaginably epic.That is one thing you can't take away from this author - she knows how to write one super epic adventure (With or without the kinks).Her characters as always are fleshed out and the setting is always graceful and mesmerising and beautifully explained. Some people probably thought the beginning was really dragged out, but it doesn't take that much from the writing and story. I find it good for people reading things out of order.But nevertheless, once again I'm so happy to have found enjoyment in another of her series. I don't find myself at all bored in any of the writing for this book. I was riveted. And because it led us across the sea to an alternate universe Ancient China I loved it even more, and of course it's a favourite now but it doesn't top the Kushiel series.I like how in all the series there's always a strong theme or idea that she repeats. Might be tiring to others, but in this book it was about how 'all ways lead to the WAY'. And after reading and thinking about it, I got it. I'm just surprised our heroine hasn't yet.Although the way things played out in the end was sad it opens up the story for the sequel.Which is on my shelf begging for me to read it. I have no qualms agreeing. I picked this up last night for a change of pace and could not bring myself to put it down until I'd finished the very last magical word. I've long been a fan of Ms. Carey but don't read her books often simply because they are so very intense and emotional. This was no exception, and I loved every single second. It will probably be several weeks before I move on to the sequel but I know it will definitely be worth the wait.
