About book Mystery Ranch (1989)

Reason for Reading: This is part of my Random Bookshelf Reading project. I'm also working on re-reading this series and collecting the first 19.This book takes a small turn from the formula of the first three. First the boxcar is not mentioned at all, not even in reminiscences of the past, and the children do not this time go off on their own and make do in the wilderness. First we see cousin Joe and Alice sent off to Europe for summer vacation on the first page. This allows the introduction of yet another new relative to the picture, this time it is Grandfather's sister, the children's "Aunt" Jane. First the girls go to visit this crotchety old lady and win over her heart and then the boys follow suit. Once again the mystery starts off with a mystery person, a stranger in town. Could he possibly be up to no good? Then three men try to buy off Aunt Jane's farm by telling her lies that the farm is worthless. Who are these suspicious men? The children set out to answer this mystery and end up finding another exciting mystery as well. Another fun, entertaining entry in the series. This one does show its age a little though with the discovery of Uranium on the farm. I know little of this mineral and after briefly reading about it find the story is quite naive in its treatment of the mining of such and that the ranch being on a Uranium deposit could possibly have been a health concern as would having a fireplace made out of Uranium. But I imagine in the 50's, Uranium was the "thing" what with it being the beging of the nuclear age and all. This is all irrelevant to the enjoyment of the story for children, though.

I would say I generally like all of the Boxcar series, but some stories are more engaging than others. They're kids books, written a long time ago, when life was simpler, and I like that feel to them. The mysteries aren't usually that mysterious, and it's not a super-exciting action type of book, but they do keep the kids interested in finding out what will happen next, and what clue will they find, and sometimes a surprise ending. There's so many in the series, I'm not going to review them all. I can't give them 5 stars, just because as an adult reading them, really, they're not 'Amazing'. So if the story was likable enough that I wanted to keep reading to find out more, and memorable enough for me to remember what happened in the book, I gave it 4 stars. Some of them weren't as good, whether because of annoying characters, or it just wasn't that much of a mystery, so those got 2 stars. And the ones that are likable, but not memorable, got 3 stars.

Do You like book Mystery Ranch (1989)?

The Boxcar Children is one of the first books I remember reading all by my self as a child in the 80's. I loved the Alden's, that much I remember, but I do not remember the stories. Because of that, I decided to re-read at least a few Boxcar Children books. When I went to the library I was amazed at how many episodes there are. There are well over 100! I always thought they went to about 20 or 30. I tried to find some of the first books so I grabbed what I thought was number 3 and 4. What I got was "Special 3" and book 4. I could not make it through Spc. 3. It just didn't seem "right". It wasn't what I remembered. But book 4, well that one felt right. I later found out that Gertrude Chandler Warner only write the first 17 or so books (no specials) and the rest were written by ghost writers. For my taste I say stick with the original. In this episode, the children go out west to stay with their crotchety Great Aunt on her farm. Of course the children, and their dog, Watch, change the the Aunts disposition and...well, the rest is a mystery that you will have to discover yourself. I recommend The Boxcar Children to any child who has not become too jaded by 1st or 2nd grade or anyone that wants a good old-fashioned read. Now, remember, these books were written between the 1920's and 1970's so there are well defined male and female roles. If you see that as a problem, perhaps you should talk with your children about what they are reading and explain that some things have changed, but that good manners and helpfulness are always appreciated. Go. Read. Enjoy.

The Alden children started the first book as orphans without anyone to take care of them except each other. Now their family has become even bigger with the discovery that their Grandfather has an older sister living on a ranch out west. The two siblings are estranged but James Alden is willing to bet that his grandkids can melt his sister's bitterness. And he's right. The mystery in this book revolves around strange men who offer to buy Great Aunt Jane's ranch. Why do they want it so bad and how far will they go to get it. sadly it's an adult matter and the adult's handle it after the kids find an important clue. (view spoiler)[Incidently, Shouldn't Aunt Jane and her housekeeper be suffering radiation poisoning after being exposed to all that Uranium? (hide spoiler)]
