About book My Two Moms: Lessons Of Love, Strength, And What Makes A Family (2012)

An important novel to expand your worldview. One of the more uncomfortable aspects of the novel, for this reader, was the direct challenge to conditioned beliefs and religious upbringing. I will never see the boardgame life in the same way. The story of Mr. Wahl's life changes the way to approach some of the more mudane aspects of sexual descrimination in our society. The novel presents a different perspective of growing up in a conservative community with two loving parents. The novel is a quick, easy read. The rhythm of the text is established through interspersing nuggets of Cub Scout wisdom as asides. Plot is patterned; repeating itself into a excellent pace. Fading into and out of stories within the novel is utilized with mixed results. Written a few years after he appeared in front of the Iowa House of Representatives to defend gay marriage and his family's rights Zach Wahls writes about this book that is part memoir and part defense of his family. Zach discusses his birth and what is was like growing up as a child of same-sex parents. Zach was active in sports, debate team, and Boy Scouts but still felt the need to defend his parents. He enjoyed a normal childhood and has a hard time understanding why the country is against his family being accepted legally.Appeal Notes (May contain spoilers):Genre: Nonfiction, Memoir, Same-sex marriagesPacing: LeisurelyCharacter: Zach Wahls and his familyTone: Inspirational, casualTime: 2011-2012Location: USComments: Nice insight into one young adult's experience growing up in a same-sex household. Why I read this book: It was on my library's high school summer reading list.
