I'd recommend this for third grade and up. I think it's too text heavy for younger kids. Also, I know it looks like I'm padding my book count with picture books just to get to a hundred, but I promise I'm not. I'm just always really behind the times when it comes to popular books so I'm reading from a list I got at a literature conference last week of new/upcoming books for kids, middle grade, and YA. Melissa Sweet does it again. Beautiful collages support Alicia Potter's introduction to Ruth Harkness: accidental explorer/scientist and conservationist ala 1930's. There is a great Author's Note in the backmatter that discusses the ethics of conservation theory of the time and how it has changed. Also in backmatter a timeline and bibliography. Wonderful if paired with PRIMATES in unit about female biologists/behaviorists.
Such lovely illustrations; would be a great part of a nonfiction collection about women in history.
