About book Mouse Guard: Legends Of The Guard, Vol. 1 (2010)
I didn't realize this would be an artist collaboration of sorts. It was really well done! The story-telling contest was a great way to allow so many artists to do their own take on Mouse Guard without disrupting the main story. I enjoyed the wide variety of tales, even the ones that were extremely short or without dialogue. I was very tickled when I reached the adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven! Overall, I loved this volume (I just hope we'll get some more main-storyline Mouse Guard eventually, too!). Mouse Guard has always succeeded extremely well in delivering simple messages in a beautiful, elegant way. It is about heroism, generosity, courage. Rivers of ink have been spent to weave tales on these themes, yet Mouse Guard has the merit of delivering them with a fresh, genuine feel that is rare to see in a time where literature is entangled in irony, and often cynicism. Mouse Guard, instead, rings with genuineness.Legends of the Guard is a collection of short tales told by various character in a contest. This trope is present in literature since its dawn. Think of Boccaccio's Decameron. And yet, one more time it is successfully used in a beautiful way. Each of the tales is interesting, the way they're put together is adorable.
