About book Mother Pious Lady: Making Sense Of Everyday India (2000)

This is a great compilation of articles from a newspaper column. I loved the way it took such a easy breezy tongue-in-cheek way of looking at the very things that make up the culture and ethos of India. A serious subject handled very deftly and lightly with just enough introspection and tons of humor to keep you glued to it. The format is also very engaging where the author has grouped the essays by broad themes which helps you get a broad stroke of ideas and images at once, if you so desire. The bite sized pieces of clear and cutting writing make it a pleasure to read whether at one sitting or over time whenever you feel the need for a pick-me-up which yet makes you think. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thought, to read about India from an Indian author would be very cliche. Well, the author hasn't told anything new, but he takes you down the memory lane in every single small chapters that's there in this book. Associating Bajaj scooters to the middle class men, the time where we used to visit unknown houses in the next lane to watch TV, the luxurious maruti car replacing ambassador & fiat, ......the list goes on with good humor staying intact through out the book.If you're an Indian and want to relish the good old days, this book is for you. For foreigners, this book gives a lot of insight to the Indian way of living.
