About book More Than It Hurts You. Darin Strauss (2010)
I forced myself to get almost half way through this book and could not stand it any longer. I was intrigued by the description of a Munchausen by Proxy case.. I didn't even get to much of that aspect. The book was too busy explaining in detail repetitive descriptions of each character..did you know the physician was black? As I'm pretty sure they mentioned she was black about 5,000 times so far.. I just can't. There were way too many characters here (with way too many complicated backstories) and way too many plot lines, too: medical drama involving a child, parental mental illness, the existential mid-life crisis of a lifelong bullshitter, racism, Jewish identity, legal and media wrangling, and marital trust. So, yes, it was too much, too complicated, and too ambitious. But still, Strauss is a very, very good writer (I'll read more by him), and the tension of the plot kept me wanting to read more. I'd compare it to last summer's Gone Girl: a fantastic and suspenseful beach read that you'll blaze through even as you see the flaws in the story.
