About book Moonshine - Stadt Der Dunkelheit (2000)

I really fell into the world of this book, which is Prohibition-era New York City, lower east side. The author paints such a beautiful picture of New York at that time that I felt completely transported. It's a world I'd love to visit again (hoping she writes many sequels!).The story is about a young woman nicknamed "The Vampire Suffragette". She works part-time for the local blood bank, delivering blood to poor and needy vampires. She teaches night classes in things like civil law, etiquette and basic reading and writing, preparing newly-turned vampires and immigrants for life in the city. She inevitably gets twisted up with the wrong characters, and she's pulled into a complicated ring of drug-runners, politicians, journalists, child gangs and vampire hunters. The tongue-in-cheek is on the surface, and how can it not be? It's Buffy meets Goodfellas, with plenty of romance and dark humor thrown in the mix. But underneath the top layer there are some really wonderful characters being drawn, with a large and varied set of histories. The one thing the author does not do is draw two-dimensional characters, which made it easy to fall for them and get wrapped up in their stories.Overall I really liked this book for what it was: a fun genre piece with a nice historical fiction element and well-drawn characters. Like I said before, I really hope she's working on sequels! yeh, i really did quite like it, it was set in an early era of NY, so i didn't quite understand some of the references, being Australian, but it was easy to visualize the setting and with words like 'floozy', it really helped set the seen. And the story line was a different take on vampires, so that was good, not like all other vampire stories. Though until i found out that there was another book in the series, i was disappointed in the ending, but hopefully the next book will have more about Amir.

A little strange. Had to get through several chapters to decide I cared how it ended...
