I'd give this book 3.5 stars, or a B+. I understand this was Sey's debut novel, and this was a very good contemporary for a first effort.FBI Agent Liz Brynn and her weasel/informant/former-thief-turned-crime-novelist Patrick O'Connor reunite to help Liz solve a counterfeit case. There are 6 years of unfinished history and unresolved sexual and emotional tension between the two, and it all comes to a head in this story.I read this book as part of AAR's TBR Challenge by SuperWendy. This month's theme is "ugly ducklings." While the heroine Liz is not exactly ugly, she is described by the hero Patrick as, "Liz would never be pretty. The cheekbones were too strong, the chin too sharp, the eyes too big and not nearly guileless enough." Liz in her polyester FBI suits and by-the-book mien comes across as unattractive, particularly in contrast to the James-Bond-smooth talk dark handsome yummy sophisticate Patrick.Both characters journey and develop as they solve their case, wtih Patrick letting go of his inner ugly duckling and Liz transforming to a swan before they get their HEA. The story is also full of interesting secondary characters. It's clear the author has well-developed prequels/sequels in mind for some of them, including Patrick's sister and the Secret Service agent Goose.My only complaint with this book is a sagging middle. The angst sometimes felt forced, especially given how long these characters have known each other and their feelings for each other. 3.5*, almost 4*.I really liked the way the author drew these characters. They were more interesting than I've read in a light contemporary romance/suspense book in ages. I bought into the reluctance of both main characters, even if I think it went on a little longer than necessary. I thought the suspense plot was decent, as well. Overall a very fun read, just perhaps not quit enough zing to move it to 4*. But close, really close. I will definitely read Ms. Sey's next offering.
