About book Mo' Meta Blues: The World According To Questlove (2013)
Essential for any Roots fan obviously but Hip Hop and contemporary music fan as well. Covers the socio-political implications of show business with enough detail that you feel like every page is a new lesson but without the seriousness of preaching. Another great addition to the book is the vastness of Quest's knowledge of all things music, I found myself buying a number of the albums mentioned after every day of reading it. May disappoint if you're expecting a very deep and heavy read about the out reaches of the hip hop world of black entertainment but if thats not the case, its a real page turner with a thought provoking message after every chapter. I liked this book. It has a lot of sides to it. It is a good discography; it will give you ideas for your playlist. It is a bit of musicology; it documents the twists and turns of the evolution of black music since doo wop. It is the biography of a drummer who grew up in a musical family, and then joined a band which has made 11 albums spanning more than twenty years. It is a nice portrait of a someone who loves music. Finally, it has many reflections on the balancing act of creative work.This guy is an insider who has always felt like an awkward outsider. He has a thoughtful, creative voice. You grow to like his personality as you read the book.It took me a while to finish this one, because sometimes I would read a page and want to look up a song. I liked that experience.
