About book Mirror, Mirror Off The Wall: How I Learned To Love My Body By Not Looking At It For A Year (2013)
I really enjoyed this book ! I was an very honest discussion about brutal thoughts women sometimes have about their bodies and their self image. Kjerstin talks about the ways in which the constant worry about what you look like and what you are wearing can easily descend into a personal state of constant emotional crisis. I also loved her ability to admit to the times when she did sneak looks about her body during the course of the year. I also loved that Kjerstin connected the self-checking ,self admiration or self deprecation changed connections in the brain as well as an individuals view on life as a whole. Interesting idea, but I couldn't get past the third chapter due to the writing. The author based this book on her blog, so I expected a more colloquial style. Unfortunately though, the writing came across as not just informal but pretty juvenile. Every page is filled with unnecessary phrases set aside in parentheses such as "after applying for my library card (approved! huzzah!)" and on the same page "I'd read (okay, skimmed)several mirror-themed writings" which got old very quickly, at least for me. I was very excited to read this, but it's going back to the library after only 60 pages.
