About book Mirai Nikki 1 (2006)

If I had to compare this series to anything, I'd say it's sort of like the Hunger Games in modern Japan - but just about everyone is an axe-crazy psychopath who can tell the future. The god of time and space needs a successor, so he chooses twelve people in Japan who keep diaries and gives those diaries the ability to tell the future. The last one alive is the new ruler of the universe. But, wait. The situation gets worse. The main kid, an introverted, generally helpless high school student named Yukiteru Amano, is diary owner #1, and he has been unwittingly stalked by crazy girl Yuno Gasai for a few months now. Turns out Yuno is diary owner #2, and every single one of her future diary's entries is about Yuki. Fully aware of his helplessness at this survival game, Yuki decides to act like he's in love with Yuno so that she'll continue to protect him. Although he's staying alive, Yuno's a bit more unstable than he initially thinks, and only one person can get out of this game alive. The one adjective I have for this series is that it's intense. This story is full of excitement and suspense. Like the first book of the Hunger Games, the plot revolves around a reluctant kid forced to either kill or be killed, but Future Diary includes a multitude of different complications.THE GOOD- the multitude of personalities Unlike book 1 of the Hunger Games, every single diary owner in Future Diary gets a back story. From a police officer with a terminally ill son to a terrorist whose parents were killed in the Middle East, every character had a life before being picked for the survival game, though some are more important in the plot than others. There are also some characters who are not a part of the game but end up becoming Yuki's allies. One of these characters, who I actually liked to my surprise, is Aru Akise. Aru Akise is a genius detective kid who gets caught up in the game by accident. He also has a huge crush on Yuki. To be honest, I usually don't like homosexual characters because they're used mainly as comic relief or to play out some pointless sexual scenes, but I actually liked Aru as a character because the homosexuality was just a part of him, not the whole thing, and while there were one or two gay jokes etc., it wasn't every time he showed up in the show. He's also pretty kickass, which is a trait not usually paired with homosexuality (unless it's a female character).- the plot twists If you like plot twists and a bit of mystery in a story, this is the series for you. Basically, there are a lot of questions about Yuno and who she really is. Less said here is better.- Yuki's character growth Yuki gets a lot of hate from the fandom for being a crybaby, but, hell, what 14-year-old wouldn't be in that situation? And he does toughen up as the series goes on.- the art Not related to the plot, but as it's a manga, I thought I'd point out that the art was good. The character designs were distinct without being bizarre (for a manga. Yuno's got pink hair and Yuki's always wearing knee-high socks.).THE BAD- nude scenes I've never been one for cartoon nudity but there is a bit of it in this series. There are two rape scenes, a sex scene, and various boob shots throughout the series, if I remember correctly. While it's not Game of Thrones, that is something to be aware of beforehand.- the plot twists Okay, I listed this in the pros above, but I also put it here. Without giving any spoilers, the main huge plot twist near the end bothered me a tad, but stories involving time twists and seeing the future and whatnot tend to do that to me. They always just kinda seem far fetched. However, this one was very obviously foreshadowed throughout the series so it ended up working out pretty well. In the bad list, but not a huge problem.- very dark scenes Some people like dark, somewhat horrific stories. I do, too. It's not necessarily bad, but for some people, it's too much. Yuno Gasai's complete and utter insanity gets a bit much at times. While it makes the books hard to put down, it's very disturbing. Beware. In all, this series doesn't have too many flaws, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone in the mood for something really exciting. This is one of my favorite mangas ever. I'd give it a 4.3/5.**By the way, this series IS NOT like Deathnote. I don't know who started saying that, but they don't know what they're talking about.
