It shows some of nature's resiliency yet it does not diminish the harm done to the New Jersey meadowlands by the same perpetrators who later help salvage it—the people who live and work here. The language is simple and direct, without being too shrill or too glossy. The message is one of hope but it does not downplay the threat. While this picture book finds its best home in elementary school libraries, I like sharing books like this with older students as a way to open discussion about our own patterns of behavior and as a way to inspire action. Nice nonfiction book about the history of the New Jersey Meadlowlands. Great details. I love the way each spread is one scene, and then there's a border of all sorts of tiny spot art things that give you tons more details.Felt like the insertion of Karin near the end was forced. I could almost hear an editor saying, "We need to get a child into this book," and at that point, it got kind of preachy, too, to me.But overall, very nifty book!
