About book Master And God. By Lindsey Davis (2012)
This was an entertaining and interesting novel set in the reign of Domitian as emperor of Rome. It is an interesting depiction of life under a capricious and paranoid ruler and the fear and uncertainty the ruler inspires in those who have to deal with him. The main characters are a praetorian guard and his girlfriend, a hairdresser. The main criticism I have with the book is the number of times their relationship goes off and then on. This was a very good read. Realistic and romantic without being silly. Scary because it describes roman war and its leaders as they were. Everyday life for ordinary citizens, some freed slaves, slaves with their awful lives, patricians, senators, and the master & god caesar. The last one a true psychological study in itself. Ms. Davis is a great author, I always look for and pick up her new creations.
