About book Marvel Comics. Una Storia Di Eroi E Supereroi (2013)

A great book that paints an awful picture of working at Marvel. I think it could have been balanced with more of the good news but as soon as theres a success another editor or suit ruins it. There are somr amusing stories though, the best being the subplot of what Stan Lee gets up to between 1973 and now...which is a whole lot of nothing!!Things I learned...The original gang of writers and artists were just middle aged men in suits, smoking cigarettes and smashing typewriters like some cliched 50's tv show.No one expected comics to become big money, which is why when they created characters they didnt expect royalties...until much later when Marvel refused causing a whole load of trouble to this day.Stan Lee was the biggest idiot or the cleverest man, haven't figured that out.Todd Macfarlane was a fucking dickhead.Too much Wolverine caused comics to go bust in the 90's...I think.oh and comics is a business first and a storyteller last.Well worth a read. A reasonably interesting book of the history of Marvel Comics, going back to before the company was named that, and before any of the iconic characters were invented yet. Anyone who's observed the comic industry with enough interest to read commentary, blogs or something like the Comics Journal probably already knows about things like Jack Kirby's arguments with the company over intellectual property and return of original art, and differences between Stan Lee's public persona and the actual role he played in creating Marvel's major properties like Spiderman, Fantastic Four and others.I found this compelling enough, overall, but not quite "can't miss" reading. Most interesting, I think, is the fact that a company that nearly failed so many times over the decades, and for such long stretches of its history was overseen by seeming incompetents, has managed to rise in recent years to such a level of prominence and financial success.
