About book Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match / Marisol McDonald No Combina (2011)

Marisol McDonald does things her own way and is unique. She is picked on by several people in her life because of the crazy way she dresses and acts. Marisol then decides maybe she should be "normal", so she tries it out for a day and it doesn't suit her. Her teacher writes her a note saying how special she really is, giving her the confidence she needs to embrace her true self. This book is diverse because it's written in Spanish and English. This book could be used to inspire students to be creative. I would read this book in my classroom and then have the students come to school dressed wacky for a day. This could also open a door to discussion on different languages and cultures. (Realistic Fiction) I loved this book. Marisol is a young girl who proudly shows her individuality, and is not afraid to be different, even when others think her odd. My 2 1/2 year old daughter loved this book and we read it over and over. We identified with the character in a big way - my daughter loves peanut butter and jelly wraps, and Marisol McDonald loves them too. We both just thought it was wonderful to be like a book character and now my daughter loves to pick out her own clothes and mix and mismatch them. Thank you for such a brilliant, self-aware, esteem boosting books for girls.
