A quiet, witty novel with completely original and affable characters. I skeptically postponed reading this but a number of reviews thankfully changed my mind. Smoothly and enjoyably, this book challenges readers to critically explore social, religious, familial and military traditions and loyalties. As the evolving protagonist, Major Pettigrew is a delightful, lovable curmudgeon I loved the sneaky-clever satire ... and the writing is fantastic. It felt like discovering a contemporary Austen or Oscar Wilde. A book reminiscent of West Side Story but in another setting; it was all about families and change. It was nice to read a book with main characters who were "late in life" and still enjoying life. The characters were so well developed that I felt if I met them on the street I would know them instantly. The social/racial/economic conflicts were presented from a different point of view, one not often depicted in books and media. The pace of the book is slow and easy, just like Major Pettigrew's life, but always interesting. there are decisions to be made, and people make them -- some good, some not so good -- just like life. Best of all, it had a happy ending.
