About book Lunch Lady And The Author Visit Vendetta (2009)
The graphic novel, “Lunch Lady and the Author Visit Vendetta” is wacky story about a school’s lunch lady who is secretly a crime fighter. This particular story is one in a set of books by Jarrett J. Krosoczka that would be good for upper elementary level students. I would introduce this story to my students by asking them what their favorite school lunch is. This would help them relate the text to themselves. We would discuss how hard the school lunch people work to bring us hot, healthy, lunches every day. I will then tell them my story about the best homemade rolls the cooks would make in my school when I was their age. You could even go back for seconds! The lunch lady in the story watches everything that goes on in the school. If something is amiss, she secretly investigates. As a text-to-text strategy, I would ask my students if they have read any other stories about crime solving detectives or mysteries. I would tell them about the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mystery stories that I read as a child. The illustrations in this novel are vivid and the text is easy to read. This book, as well as others in the series, would be good for the struggling reader who is in 3rd grade or above. In this story, the gym teacher is missing after a book author comes to the school to visit. The lunch lady is worried about the missing teacher and is determined to get to the bottom of it. As a text-to-world strategy, I would ask my students if they know what an “Amber Alert” is. This would initiate a discussion about missing persons, children in particular. We would review key points about stranger danger and how to keep yourself safe. We would spend the most time discussing safety on the internet. Students at this age level need to be aware of people who bully, stalk, or harass on the internet. Lunch Lady and the Author Visit Vendetta by Jarrett J. Krosoczka is the third of the Lunch Lady series. Dee, Terrence and Hector are excited to have a favorite author at their school. When the author isn't what they expected and the school coach goes missing, the kids and the Lunch Lady (with trusty Betty at her side) must investigate.As far as set ups go for this series, this one seems the least plausible. The whole set up is based around an incredibly famous and wealthy children's author who hates children and hates making public appearances. The author's evil scheme, though, is amusing.My reaction to book three is hit or miss. It will either work for you or it won't. So far my favorites are books two (Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians) and four (Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown).
