About book Lucky Me: My Life With--and Without--My Mom, Shirley MacLaine (2013)

Whoosh! Well...I just don't know. It was certainly interesting and not at all boring. But is Sachi just a nutty fabulist like her mom? Then again...who'd make this stuff up. And somehow I have no trouble believing that - perhaps - Shirley MacLaine is this cold. If half of this stuff is to be believed then we are talking about real abuse. What kind of woman just abandons her child to such a jerk as that father of hers? The thing I mostly came away with was that Shirley simply doesn't and has never loved her daughter. No connection whatsoever. She gives it the old acting try but it doesn't seem to be there. And I guess it's taken Sachi a really long time to realize this. That is...if all this is true. When my eldest daughter was about 5 years old we went to a fancy bookstore. In the corner there was a lady who was selling magical, new age crystals. My daughter, being naturally curious went up to look at the lady's mystical display. The woman started to explain to my daughter all the incredible properties her rocks had. She said they had healing powers and could also help her see into the future. I could not get her away from that lady fast enough. I found the encounter very disturbing. After reading this autobiography by Sachi Parker, the daughter of Shirley MacLaine, I feel that my distrust of new age mystics is justified. Sachi Parker's book is a tale of two narcissistic parents, one a con artist, the other a gullible, famous actress who believes in other planes of existence. I really enjoyed Sachi's funny stories involving working as a stewardess for Quantas airlines and farting her way through a Japanese movie as an actress. Sachi had an interesting life in Japan, France, England, Australia and America without much support from her flaky parents. I'm glad she ran away from her mom's far out beliefs. This book was an entertaining read.
