About book Lucky Child (2009)

There was so much about this book that just barely missed the mark. This story should've been all emotion, but even in the most obviously touching moments, it's closed off. The author lived through countless and unimaginable horrors, but his lack of descriptive text left me hollow on the experience. Obviously, I wanted to love this book. I wanted to learn from a painful past. This was not accomplished. The author still tells an interesting perspective on the Holocaust, but his heart didn't make it into the story. I really loved this book. Not only was it a powerful firsthand account of surviving the holocaust, but I think it was also quite well-written. Thomas Buergenthal tells his story using clear and succinct language. He doesn't burden the text with unnecessary details or by trying to recreate each event as though he were writing a novel. He recounts each experience with minimal commentary and leaves the reader to digest the poignancy of what he has written.

Interesting from a child's perspective, but would have liked a lot more detail.
