I wasn't sure if I would like this book when I started. I was a late comer to this series and got interested in it after seeing the book Because of Jade being released. The writing style is concise. There is a lot of mystery around the characters; you only get glimpses of their past, not their whole stories. For some readers, that might be frustrating, but I found that it allowed me to focus the developing relationship between Luki and Sonny; not their (clearly) heavy baggage. Luki is a former ATF agent turned security contractor; Sonny is a weaver. It's clear both men have been hurt badly in the past, but can't keep themselves from each other. Luki has a ice dam around his emotions, but Sonny gets under and through the dam eventually. There's mystery in the story. Lots of mystery. Sonny's nephew is missing. Someone is destroying Sonny's works/stalking him and people are getting hurt. Nothing is as it seems. The stalker keeps the men together, but not easily. They struggle with their feelings, especially Luki. He wants to avoid emotional entanglements, but can't keep himself from providing the protection that Sonny needs.In the end, the big mystery is solved, but the men's pasts and future are still unsettled. We learned large part of Luki's pain from the past, but not a whole lot about Sonny's past or present outside of Luki. The men love and trust each other, that is not in doubt. However, due to the confrontation with the bad guy, everyone is injured, and we really don't get a good idea how bad it is. I have no doubt that those answers and more are in the second book: Delsyn's Blues. In the end, I couldn't wait to see how the confrontation came out. I also immediately put the remaining books into my wishlist to buy as soon as I can to see how Luki and Sonny get to their HEA in Because of Jade. I got this copy of Loving Luki Vasquez from the author in exchange for an honest review. Ok. I liked most of this book, but what didn't work really took me out of the story, and nearly ruined it. I live in the area this book is set in, and it has some glaring mistakes. There are no almond orchards in Washington. The Keystone ferry doesn't go to Everett. You don't drive through Monroe while driving up I-5. This is a known issue for me, I try so hard not to let it bother me, but it does. I understand making up locations, as the author does in this book, but if you are going to use a real location it needs to be accurate. I'm sorry, but that is my opinion. It try so hard not to let it affect my liking of a book, but it does.Ignoring those issues and trying to be unbiased, I mostly liked the story. I love Luki and Sonny, they are great characters with lots of depth to them. Most of the story worked for me, although I'm not sure why folks from the peninsula would be heading to Bellingham so much...But anyway! It's a good book, not great, but I'm reading more of them to see how it goes!
