About book Los Proyectos Manhattan Vol. 1: Ciencia. Malo. (2013)
I was rather disappointed with this book. First, the art was not for me. It was scribbly and loose and mushy. It reminded me a lot of the old cartoon Rugrats from Nickelodeon, which I also disliked for the same reason. The coloring was ok, and when it was just blue and red was interesting, but the line art I just didn't like. The story was not great, though it had a good premise. I like the idea of this secret military science operation and some of the sci-fi things they came up with were pretty cool. But the actual story and dialogue was just kind of all over the place. No real storyline. No character arcs. Just, kinda, meh.I read through it all, so it was ok, but just barely. I wasn't excited to read it by any means, and I wouldn't recommend it. I definitely won't be getting volume 2. The premise of the Manhattan Projects is that the construction of the atomic bomb was just the tip of the iceberg of mad science projects the assembled geniuses at Los Alamos were working on for the U.S. military. The cast includes Oppenheimer, Einstein, Fermi, Von Braun, and Feynman among others. Hickman depicts the legendary scientists as a collection of dangerous lunatics with various flavors of crazy. Oppenheimer in particular is portrayed as a homicidal psychopath. It could potentially be quite offensive on a number of levels, but the story is clearly not set in anything close to the real world.Nick Pitarra's art is worth mentioning. He does a remarkable impression of Geof Darrow here.
