About book Los Juegos (2014)

Grabbed this one by chance at my library's "Reader's Choice" table. It sounded amazing and I had been on a Michael Crichton and dystopian society kick, so I picked it up.I'm torn on how to feel about this one. On one hand, it kept my interest and I sincerely wanted to know what happened next. On the other, it was also somewhat predictable (it kept my interest precisely because I kept hoping that I was wrong) and never lived up to its potential. Some of it was confusing, and some of it was too vague to build a world that felt real.I wanted to see more of the other monsters too. There was such a lead up to the games themselves that it was a letdown when we didn't really see much of them. It's good, but it's not great. If you're willing to overlook its flaws and just go with it, give it a try. I agreed to a date with the premise and married the writing. There were lines that stopped me for days, stunned me into a newfound appreciation for the literary art and I cannot begin to praise the idea and plot development. If there is one flaw, and I find myself squinting in attempt to see it clearly, it is that there is little to no character arcs. No one changes, alters their point of view of the world or comes out of the story any different from the way they came in. That being said, the characters were fleshed out and real, which made a huge difference to my experience.
