Looking Like Me, by Walter Dean Myers, was a very different kind of book that I have read. I did not know what to think of about it when I first started reading it. I didn’t quite understand where the book was going until I realized it was a poetry book. I thought that towards the middle of the book I started to really enjoy the book because it started to look into different things around the life of the main character. I would give my students access to this book since it is so different. I do not know if I would read it in my classroom but I wouldn’t mind having it available to my students. It just wasn’t my type of book to read but to some students I know they will love it. Summary: This book brings a poem about the many qualities of a boy to life. Not only is he a boy; he is a son, writer, runner, and much more. Personal Reaction/ Visual Appeal: I think this poem is inspirational in many ways. It is important for children to celebrate their qualities in school, especially when they are so often being judged. The background illustrations give the book an edgy feel, making it a contemporary option to sharing poetry with kids. Intended Audience: Elementary age studentsCurriculum Connection: This book could be used to introduce poetry to students. Students could then be encouraged to write their own poetry about themselves.
Great book. The book encourages you to make a list about yourself, which I think is awesome.
