I liked "The True Deceiver" by Tove Jansson, and I read it awhile ago, butt there is nothing lasting about this book that I can even remember. I have read the back synopsis and Ali Smith's introduction again, but this is one of those book, where a month post reading, I don't remember a thing about it. I remember liking it. I remember liking the way that Tove Jansson writes. I remember that I told myself I need to read more of her books. Maybe the next one with have a more lasting impression. For some reason, this is the most soothing book I've ever read. The landscape is a character, warm and loving despite being in fact physically cold, snowy, and dark. The characters interact in a sensible (Scandinavian) way. Katri is, in essence, a Vulcan, and reading about such a person brings me peace. Mats is wonderful, too. It's also just a profoundly interesting story. At the end, I studied each of the opposing frames on the last two pages and tried to solve the puzzle. I would even go so far as to say that if someone were to read this book--PAIRED with Jansson's The Summer Book-- they would understand me as a person (you know, for what it's worth- not of that much interest to others, but for me that's pretty amazing!).
