I love love love this book. It's a love story between two lonely creatures who find they need each other. Little Cub resonates with me and how I feel about my own children joining me to become a family. I love love love it - each bear truly brings out the best in the other. I just wish it was shorter so I could share it with more children in story times. But you know I think it's perfect just the way it is! Maybe I just wish I had older, more mature listeners in my story times? This is a touching story about the little cub and Old Bear, two lonely bears living friendless in the forest. Their stories are told in parallel, and we see how each goes about his day alone, the little cub wishing he had someone to teach him how to fish and collect honey because he's so hungry and Old Bear wishing he had someone with whom he could share his foodThe two sad souls finally meet and make a family. As Old Bear tucks Little Cub into bed, he asks if the youngster would like to hear a story. Little Cub replies, "Yes, I'd like that! I've never had a story before." Sigh. Weep. Awww. The illustrations are spare, and the bears are rendered in ways that say, subtly, a lot about who they are: the little cub's fur is a bright coppery orange and his eyes are wide with youth and wonder; Old Bear's fur is a dull brown, and his bushy white eyebrows and squinted eyes give him the appearance of a grizzled and sagacious soul.Recommended for readers who like books about love.
