About book L'Indignée (2000)

Bendis and Maleev back together again! While, yes, I did expect Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson to appear in the next panel, it was great to see these two fantastic creators collaborating again. While the plot isn't the most original (Loved it when I saw it first in The Legend Of Billie Jean), I really enjoyed the book. It was off-putting when multiple characters talked to the reader/camera but it was an interesting decision. The grim and gritty art by Maleev is perfect for this book and BMB's script is exactly what I've expected from him over the years. Overall, the book is a great beginning to what I hope is a wonderful story. I went into this not quite sure what to expect but seeking a compelling comic with a strong, female character and relevant, contemporary themes.I got all of that and more.Scarlet declares war and revolution against corrupt police officers after a drug-addicted cop shoots her boyfriend and her. Things rapidly escalate from there.Scarlet as a character concept seems a little far-fetched at first, but readers should keep in mind that this is a woman ruled by desperation. She is desperate for answers, for justice, for vengeance, and with all that in hand, her story finds grounds in reality.I felt the story progressed a tad too quickly after book two. I wanted more setup and execution, but I can't complain too much. It was still wonderfully executed. The art style is gritty and realistic, befitting the comic's theme. Occasionally, a lazy panel slips in where the same model or pose is used as the previous panel, but it's definitely not a game-breaker.

This is Brian's love letter to Portland. As I am born and raised here I'm a wee bit biased.

Excellent graphics and an interesting plot, but it just didn't really hook me.
