Nellie Peck is a delightful character -- on the very edge between childhood and adulthood. She makes me remember feeling averse to many adult traits and being completely sure that I would be different and not fall into the grownups world of compromise. The Peck family are wonderfully drawn as is the small town and its other inhabitants. This book reminds me of To Kill a Mockingbird, it is that kind of a timeless tale that immerses you in a strangely familiar landscape that you loathe to leave. This was a good book, with interesting characters. I've read another Mary McGarry Morris' book and know that she tends to write about troubled characters in these unhappy situations. This one wasn't quite as sad as the other book but it was still disturbing. McGarry Morris is very talented at portraying real life and real characters. My main complaint is that the book ended too abruptly. Yes, I realize that real life doesn't get wrap up nicely like a present but there were just too many plot lines that were unresolved. The ending left me unsatisfied and wondering what was the point of the book.
