About book Lifeboat No. 8: An Untold Tale Of Love, Loss, And Surviving The Titanic (2012)

Elizabeth Kaye takes the story of the people in one specific lifeboat, No. 8, and tells what happened to them when Titanic went down on April 15, 1912. That's the beginning, middle and end of the story, pretty much. The problem is, this ebook release is so short that there's no time to explore with any depth what happened to them after the sinking. You get a bit of an idea, but not in-depth research. The story leading up to this is oft-told. We know that Titanic struck an iceberg very late on April 14, and by 2:20am she was gone. We know that the lifeboats were released without enough people in them, and that there weren't enough lifeboats to begin with. We know that SOS was used for the first time in calling for help during this disaster. We know that the California was very nearby and did nothing. In the lifeboat, however, ladies took the oars and steered, led singalongs to keep people warm and awake, and tried to row to the lights of a nearby ship. One in particular made sure to tell her story and to praise the crewman who did his best to keep them going. It is unfortunate that just as the story is taking off into new territory, this little ebook ends. I mourn for all the non-survivors of the history's greatest maritime disaster. All throughout my reading experience, I can feel how horrible and heart wrenching the incident was. I say I was emotionally affected and the whole thins was unimaginably traumatic. They say the best way to relate to history is to let yourself get involved in it somehow. And this book has done that thing to me. As if it bring me back the time and I seem to witness the whole thing through the accounts of the survivors.
