About book Letters In The Jade Dragon Box (2011)

4.5 stars. This did seem to be more of a YA book - fast paced, a little sparse in the details. I did love the story, how a young Chinese girl in Hong Kong reconnects with her mother in mainland China during the 1970's. I thought the LDS element would be more prevalent, but really, that was just a sidenote. The story was almost independent of religious stuff. The ending brought a tear to my eye. I think my daughters would love this. Wonderful book. I really enjoyed this and was surprised by how much I learned about more recent Chinese history. I had forgotten whatever I learned about Mao and was filled with compassion for the people and their land that underwent so many unnecessary griefs under his 27-year rule. It was also fascinating to me to learn about the Church's history there. I am even more excited now for when LDS missionaries are allowed to proselyte there! I hope my daughter (who loves everything Chinese) will be one of them someday.

I really learned of life in Mao's China via a novel. I hate communism and socialism even more now.
