Unlike O'Connell's other books (the fab Mallory Series that ends with Find Me) this meticulously- plotted tale introduces handsome Oren Hobbs, returned to his home in a small California coastal town after two decades absence. Oren discovers someone's bones are being left on his father's front porch...and he is painfully aware of whose they are. All this writer's books are glued-to-the-seat great, with tension of every kind on each page, unique primary characters with way-out flaws, plus some unusual secondary characters with often bizarre habits and always with bizarre pasts. O'Connell is a patient writer, tucking clues around like the reader's on an Easter egg hunt. Bone by Bone is no exception. Carol O'Connell captures the evil lurking just beneath the surface in small towns perfectly. Ms O'Connell has mastered the art of show and don't tell, one of the most difficult skills an author can ever hope to develop and one that shows remarkable restraint and belief in an audience too used to being spoonfed information. I became a fan with Mallory's Oracle and devoured the subsequent Mallory novels. Bone by Bone is a standalone novel that proves that Kathy Mallory, although one of my favourite female protagonists, is not the only reason I've enjoyed Ms O'Connell's work for years.
