Joss Ware/Colleen Gleason has written a story that gave me chills. What if our life was destroyed in a heartbeat? The story is so incredible and the danger so exciting that I was hooked. The characters are well written and the setting is so powerful. I was especially drawn to Jade and Dr. Elliott Drake. They are an intriguing couple. They fight the attraction they feel, but finally realize that you need someone to love and to love you. This is a suspenseful story that is filled with unexpected twists. Beyond the Night is the first book in the Envy Chronicles. I can't wait to start reading the next one. I want to know more about Envy Nevada and her people and about the Immortals and their plans. Dr. Elliott Drake and 4 friends come upon a group of teens being attacked by gangas (zombies) and manage to save them. They are assisted by a mysterious woman riding in on a mustang, bareback. When the dust clears and the wounded treated they escort the kids home to Envy (former Las Vegas, NV). This scenario takes place 50 years in the future after the world has been devastated by earthquakes, storms, floods, and mysterious invisible deaths leaving a minute population, prey to the gangas and the Strangers. The 5 men who saved the teens were on a caving expedition when the devastation occurred and woke up to find this destruction. They have been wandering and trying to piece together what has happened to them. Elliott has discovered some new talents, as has Quent, but they both come with a downside. In Envy they hope to find some answers. After a heroes welcome, Elliott again runs into Jade. Jade provides some answers but also the dangers and hidden agendas of this world. Can their new talents help save what is left of society? This was a fast-paced adventure, science fiction, romance with a resolution here for the main characters. But this is also a world building book with more heroes/heroines to develop and villains to vanquish in future volumes. Looking forward to it.
