About book Legendary Pokémon (2009)

Volume 2 of Pokemon Adventures picks up immediately after the first one, following Red through the later half of the Kanto region. The story quickly becomes centered around Red and Blue's (now helped by a feisty thieving Green) war against Team Rocket. The normal game quest to obtain the 8 badges gets a bit obscured in this volume post Red's battle with Erica, but this is ok because the manga incorporates Koga, Sabrina, and a renegade Blaine, all as upper level members of the Team Rocket organization. The manga even incorporates a race for the three legendary birds of the original games. The manga continues the first one's excellent retelling the Red and Blue games. Where the original content lacked story or provided gaps, the manga has done a fantastic job adding an extra layer of depth when needed. I particularly enjoyed Team Rocket's quest to gather Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos. I also think half of the Kanto gym leaders as members of Team Rocket creates a very interesting twist on the landscape of the Red/Blue games that I wish the anime actually incorporated. The gym leaders in the manga actually feel like powerful Pokemon trainers it's very different from the mostly lame formulaic cartoon. Green is also such an enjoyable random rogue. The perfect female protagonist for the series. For continued excellence in both story and art this gets a 4. This is quickly becoming my favorite interpretation of Pokemon outside of the games! This volume actually mentions cloning and that Pokemon eventually die. These might be slightly harder subjects for some readers. My biggest issue was that the female trainer Green was so devious as to be almost evil. That and she wasn't even that good of a trainer even though she knocked out at least one of Red's team.I did appreciate the display of Blue's training versus Red's. It was nice to see the effect on Blue's Pokemon.
