About book Leading On Empty: Refilling Your Tank And Renewing Your Passion (2009)
I've read several books on how to lead in the midst of burnout. Most books give you simplistic advice like "think happy thoughts and it will all be better" or (more common) "flee from the stresses in your life (quit your job, leave your relationship, simply run from your problems.) This book was written with raw and honest emotion and practical advice from someone who has successfully moved through burnout while leading people that still needed him emotionally and as a workplace leader. I've also put into practice several aspects of his advice, and they are very effective. The most helpful thing about this book is that it is the story of a man who burned out and not only survived it but is still living for God, doing full-time church ministry. For a person who has been in the pit of depression, that is the most encouraging thing. There are definitely things to criticize here, but they have probably all been pointed out here before. I think there is alot of experience, wisdom and practical help to be found.
