About book Leaders Eat Last (2014)

At 200+ pages, this is really a pamphlet and not a book. I didn't think it offered a lot of new stuff (I still think "good to great" is one of the better books about business leadership), though some of its perspectives (the part about the leadership styles from the Greatest Generation and the Baby Boomers, for example), was rather novel. Overall, I think his TED talk pretty much covered all the bases. I heard Simon speak at the RE/MAX convention in Las Vega earlier this year as he mesmerized the crowd. The Circle of Safety is what all members of an organization seek and it is up to the leaders to create this circle to protect the group from outside dangers which are constant. “At all times these forces work to hinder growth and profitability”. The book describes how our bodies use; endorphins: the runners high; dopamine: an incentive for progress; serotonin: the leadership chemical and oxytocin: chemical love. Mr. Sinek talks a lot about leadership; “What makes a good leader is they eschew the spotlight in favor of spending time and energy to do what they need to do to support and protect their people”. “Trust is a very special human experience produced by the chemical oxytocin in response to acts performed on our behalf that serve our safety and protection”. Mr. Sinek uses case studies from the military and corporate America to show the good and bad we all experience every day and leaves us challenged to Eat Last.
