A series of unfortunate events in China... Some interesting parts, some good descriptions of early forensics (hence the moniker, Corpse Reader, for the main character). But my overall impression was that too much misfortune occurred, and while much of it led to the final climax, the book would have worked just as well without some of the drawn-out situations. As one terrible thing after another took place, rather than feeling sympathetic to Ci', I felt.annoyed that he'd found one moe predicament to get into. This is a super read. Song Ci is an actual person that Garrido has built a novel around.During the Tsong dynasty Song was the first known person to document post mortem examinations and per the author is the world's first forensic scientist. His 5 treatises on foenensics were all published in 1247. They are still available today.The intrigue at the Emperor's court and in all circles of power is fascinating as are all the characters. I found the Author's note at the end as interesting as the novel. Now that's rare.
