Gripping. This book is a wonderful look into the rural United States during the Prohibition Era. It picks you up out of your seat and places you in Franklin County, bumping up and down on those winding dirt roads. I couldn't help but appreciate the grit of the Bondurant brothers, and their "leave us alone" attitude. I never agreed with all of their actions, but I had sympathy all the same. There is a little of that "get what you get" mentality in all of us, and it can either crush us or drive us. The writing was beautiful. It made me feel like I had oil on my skin, brandy in my chest, and sweat in my socks. Matt Bondurant has a way of bringing these characters to life unlike any other books on the Bondurant brothers. I recommend this for ALL readers. Want a taste of Grandma's homemade peach cobbler fresh out of the oven? Pick this book up. Typically I will read the book before watching the movie. It was only after watching Lawless that I learned the movie was based on a book. Regardless, I enjoyed the movie so much and interested in this subject - love all things southern, mountains and moonshine - that I went ahead and read the book. The movie follows the book for the most part but enjoyed the character development and some of the back and side stories that were not in the movie. Really enjoyed the book. Wonderfully written and although I knew the plot and the events I still thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The story jumped around too much. It was hard to follow sometimes. Weak story.
