La storia inizia a New York,dove Joey lavora come architetto. Uscita da una logorante relazione con un collega (un vero bastardo,aggiungo), Joey vede nell'incarico di restaurare la vecchia villa di J.M.Barrie (l'autore di Peter Pan,per intenderci) la possibilità di far prendere una boccata di aria fresca alla sua vita. Arrivata a Londra, la Zitwer, ci mette subito di fronte al rapporto burrascoso tra Joey e Sarah, sua vecchia amica d'infanzia. La lontananza, gli stili di vita completamente differenti (Sarah è madre e casalinga) sembrano aver scavato una voragine nella loro amicizia. Recuperarla sarà un sentiero tortuoso che si snoderà per tutto il libro. Ma i problemi non sono finiti qua per la simpatica americana che si trova a fare conti con l'affascinante ma alquanto scorbutico custode della Stanway House,Ian e con la di lui figlia adolescente Lily. A risolvere i suoi guai arriveranno cinque strampalate vecchiette...Barbara J.Zitwer fa una cosa molto coraggiosa puntando tutto su un sentimento di questi tempi un po' troppo sottovalutato: l'amicizia. Nonostante ci sia una timida storia d'amore al suo interno,questo libro infatti si concentra soprattutto su complicati,strani e meravigliosi rapporti di amicizia: l'amicizia quasi secolare che unisce le cinque arzille nonnine,l'amicizia che unirà poi Joey , la nostra protagonista, a queste incredibili ottuagenarie,quella invece tremendamente incerta e barcollante tra Joey e Sarah e quella sincera e materna tra Joey e la quindicenne Lily.La Zitwer fa un lavoro eccellente,facendo emergere non solo la parte più dolce dell'amicizia ma anche la parte più difficile,quella della verità ad ogni costo,anche se fa male.Un libro leggero ma pieno zeppo di calore.
