Una novela con un humor negro incomparable. Ibargüengoitia narra una historia basada en hechos reales que parecen más bien una novela de terror en la que se demuestra lo mas retorcido de la naturaleza humana. Aun cuando en la trama existen crímenes terribles (prostitución, homicidio, secuestro, violaciones) el autor no hace creer que todo se debe a la ignorancia y la inocencia (?) de las mujeres dueñas de un burdel. Una mentira que llevo a un secuestro, un intento de curación que llevo a una muerte, un malentendido que termino en un asesinato. Cada una de las acciones de las hermanas Baladro tiene consecuencias inimaginables (el efecto bola de nieve) que las llevan de ser mujeres adineradas y con influencias en el gobierno a terminar sus días en la cárcel.Lo que es increíble es que Ibargüengoitia no haga que odiemos a estas mujeres después de las cosas que hicieron. Parece que nada fue culpa de ellas, que fueron obligadas por las circunstancias a actuar de esa forma y que no tenían más remedio que hacer las cosas que hicieron. Y aun habiendo tantos cadáveres y tantos abusos, parece que no hay culpables.Sin duda lo mejor de la novela es el humor negro con el que el autor narra las desventuras de estas mujeres, sus relaciones con el corrupto gobierno y los actos que las llevaron a ser encerradas. Es raro reír leyendo tanta desgracia.
Another book lent to me by my friend was this short Mexican book. At first, she seemed very keen to borrow it, and then she almost regretted it, saying that while she was thinking about it she thought it might not be as interesting as she made it sound at first. But I decided to take it anyway and decide for myself.The book tells the story of a revenge and how the arrest of the woman who commits the revenge leads to the discovery of some buried bodies. The rest is the investigation to discover who the bodies used to be and how they got there. I thought it was good, in particular because it is written in an interesting way: like a police report, saying what each witness contributes to the case. It shows the type of corruption that exists in Mexico, even if the story supposedly happens in the 50s-60s.It is a short book, easy to read, and even though it's not one of my favorite books, I had fun reading it. It is one of those typical stories of how an accident may lead people to slowly get crazy and lead to another "accident" and then another thing that may not be so much an accident; whether because of greed, or simple paranoia. In these aspects, it is very interesting the way the book shows the different feelings of people depending on their different situations and various circumstances.If you have some spare time, I recommend it.

I found this novel in my local Oxfam bookshop in English translation. It was only £2 so I didn't have great expectations but was pleasantly surprised. The story, fiction but inspired by a true event, is written with dry humour in a style that often reads like police reports interspersed with witness statements. The plot is not that of a standard crime thriller and incorporates a lot of black humour. The characters develop as we discover more about them and all their actions are completely believable given the circumstances in which they find themselves. The Dead Girls is very readable and Jorge has great understanding of human nature and motivation. An enjoyable read and a satisfying novel.

Ibarguengoitia tiene un estilo muy particular que o gusta o no. A mí me gusta, y este libro no es la excepción. Corto y al punto, "Las muertas" es un relato cuasi-periodístico satírico sobre un caso real ocurrido en Guanajuato.Como siempre, Ibarguengoitia evidencia la ridiculez de las situaciones en las que se ven enfrascados su grupo de personajes incompetentes, con su característico humor sarcástico pero un tono más oscuro que en otras de sus novelas."Las muertas" no tiene episodios tan divertidos o memorables como "Los Pasos de López", pero presenta una historia menos conocida y sumamente interesante, especialmente si se considera que también está basada en hechos reales.
