It was so good I could cry...at first. Afterwards, I slowly felt like crying for completely different reasons...¤sad sighIt started out strong, with a frightfully entertaining exchange of letters between the two main characters through the years that they had been apart. I was only 20 pages in and I already had some quotes written down and enjoying every second of what I THOUGHT was to come. Oh, and Chase did a perfect job of keeping me entertained for over half of the book, while perfectly stringing me along like dangling candy in front of a kid while murmuring "Come and get it, you little numskull! Yes, just a little more...That's it..." and then WHAM! she strikes you on the head with that lollipop. No, really, it's exactly like that! Just let me gather my wits and explain:Two childhood friends meet again after 5 years, having last seen each other as youths of 17, respectively 18 years old. Yes, of course, they have now acquired a keen eye for "smoldering-looking-things-passing-by" and since, oh, both happened to turn out just as smoldering, they start gazing at one another through a new pair of lens. Which, I dig...truly, I do, because Chase does a great job of balancing it out without making them seem ridiculously perfect. Some snort-inducing second characters are thrown in, the pace is lively and an adventure rises up on the horizon, so we're ready to launch! But after pulling the angst leg as far as she could, the author decides they might as well passionately kiss (too many times, too early) before the real adventure truly starts and the boat starts sinking...By the time the two fall in bed together I was thinking "You better pull this one right if they're already getting frisky together in this stage...Oh, you better have a solid reason or turn-about or unforeseen twist to make all this explode in their faces!" But nope, there isn't...and after building the conflict throughout the entire (almost...) book on the principle that the H and h are and want different things in life to the degree that making them see eye to eye is impossible (it's in their veins, I tell ya' and engraved in their souls ~ polar opposites and all that mambo-jumbo), Chase let's them rumple the sheets 3,4,5 times just to end it in "Ok, sugarplum! I'm suddenly fine not following my needs and wants anymore, so let's just marry and have it your way! Oh, and by the by, I do love you so, you ragamuffin, you..." *blinks WHAT?!?!?!?! Drat, and it held such potential...if only Chase would have managed the sexual tension better and paced her story a bit differently this could have been a keeper... E eu percebi que essa autora gosta de trabalhar com personagens fortes, e com muita personalidade. Quem não lembra de Jéssica atirando em Sebastian??Last Night's Scandal nos apresenta a história de Peregrine - Conde de Lisle- e Olivia - Miss Carsington, rica herdeira. Eles se conhecem desde crianças e são os melhores amigos uns dos outros.. Olivia, como Lisle afirma varias vezes, nunca foi inocente ou ingenua - daí vocês já podem imaginar - ela como uma herdeira e grande beleza, já teve várias propostas de casamento, as quais ela aceitava e depois recusava; ela também já teve sua dose de pequenos escândalos, os quais sempre a levavam a ser exilada no interior até que o furor cessasse. Como ela mesmo gosta de dizer, não há nada que uma grande fortuna e boas relações não possam abafar.Lisle já é o completo oposto, muito correto, organizado e metódico. ele passou grande parte da sua vida no Egito (ele acabou indo pra lá como resultado de uma das aventuras de Olivia quando criança) e ele ama tudo aquilo - o seu trabalho como escavador, o clima, as pessoas, os Carsingtons - a familia de Olivia que se tornou a familia dele enquanto no Egito (os pais dele são umas coisas muito doida, que só se importam com eles mesmos.. doidos de pedra).Os dois sempre enviavam cartas uns pros outros - e o livro já começa muito bem com esses intercâmbios!!! Eventualmente, Lisle, já adulto, volta a Inglaterra e se encontra novamente com Olivia, o que ele não esperava era ver como ela tinha se transformado em uma bela mulher. Olivia também não esperava ver ele em toda a sua glória máscula. O intercambio dos dois no baile é impagável!A trama se desenrola quando Lisle se vê preso na trama dos seus pais para mandá-lo reconstruir uma das propriedades da família na Escócia, como é obvio que ele não quer ir, seus pais cortam tbm a sua mesada para pressioná-lo ainda mais. O negocio embola ainda mais quando Olivia entra na jogada para "ajudar" Lisle.. eles acabam indo pra Escócia (com umas acompanhantes muito doidas), e lá se deparam com o desafio de restaurar o castelo e tbm de lutar contra a atração entre eles, que é cada vez forte.O legal do texto da Loretta, é que como seus protagonistas são bem decididos e "vividos" eles encaram tudo isso com naturalidade, claro que tem as dúvidas de sempre, mas isso não fica emperrando a história como em outros livros. Eles vão aprendendo a lidar com os seus sentimentos e como a atração é forte, vão dando vários pegas tbm.. tudo isso em meio a reforma e caça a um tesouro/fantasmas! hauhauahuaa...A história toda é muito divertida e envolvente, e se você gostou de Abandonada em Seus Braços, eu tenho certeza que você vai adorar Last Night's Scandal. Tem alguns traços na escrita de ambos os livros que são bem parecidos, por exemplo, no livro do Sebastian, a autora usava palavras demoníacas para representá-lo, e neste livro ela lança mão da mesma arma para dar vivacidade ao texto.. é bem engraçado!!Eu super recomendo! Não é sempre que encontramos um bom romance, sem ser piegas, com aventura, mistério e ainda mais na época vitoriana =)

Lighthearted romp with over-the-top characters. Sort of a "Bringing Up Baby" screwball feel.
