About book Lady Almina And The Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy Of Highclere Castle (2011)
For fans of Downton Abbey and those interested in the history behind Highclere Castle. The book, written by the current owner of the castle, covers the period of first world war, and the many contributions of the first owner, Lord Carnarvon. One fascinating fact was his contribution to the discovery of King Tut's tomb. Alfred Rothschild, whose wealth allowed the castle to be used as a hospital, and to provide expert care for injured soldiers, was the father of Lady Almina. She was able to marry well and become one of the wealthiest women in England,in spite of being Rothschild's illegitimate daughter. The author is to be commended for her expert research of family archives and selecting fascinating photos of the family from the early days of the castle to the present. A satisfying and informative read. Oof, what a disappointment. As a fan of Downton Abbey and English history in general, I was very excited to find this book. I was expecting much more than meandering anecdotes of the wealthy residents of Highclere in WWI. There was little to nothing about servant life, and really the book could have been about any English estate. Actually ended up abandoning this one only half way through.When it comes to writing, I don't think the Countess should quit her day job.
