A writer's review Keri Arthur is an author to look up to. Each book is an emotional page-turner and Darkness Hunts was no exception. (Teeny SPOILERS ahead.)As a writer, this book reminded me to reflect on the following areas of my own work.1. Never stop action is a page turner. In Darkness Hunts, Risa in on her way up to work on bills when the kitchen suddenly explodes. In my writing, Risa would work on the bills first and then the kitchen would explode. (This quite possibly could be my slight neurotic tendencies coming forward.)But I must remember: bills = boring, explosion = page-turner. 2. Do not break the tension once it's in your grasp. In this book, Risa is consistently exhasted. No sleep = more danger. It brings the character to a breaking point. It increases the fear I have for Risa to get out of her impossible situation. I really just wanted her to take a nap. I fear in my own story, I would have.3. Avoid repetition. K.A. used shivering and rubbing arms as a way to signify fear/apprehension. Risa shivered and rubbed her arms quite a bit during this novel. The emotion this action gave me lost its power towards the end.4. Unrequited love in a series will make readers come back for more. Although this is definitely true, at least with this reader, I wouldn't have the heart to do it for my characters. As writers, we are supposed to be mean to our characters. Give them hell and then sit back with a glass of wine as they find a way out of it. I strive to do this in my own writing, but I don't have the stomach to take away their happily ever after (HEA) at the end of the book. Although in other novels, it does keep me coming back for more. I can't be happy until Risa has found her HEA. I gave this book four stars. At the end I was left:Anxious. . .CheckEmotional. . .CheckWanting more. . .CheckSatisfied with the romantic elements provided (read sex here). . .CheckHEA fulfilled. . .No Check :( Risa is at it again in this thrilling fourth installment of the Dark Angels series. Risa runs in to an astral traveler at the beginning of this book, and has to find and stop the madman that is killing off the vampires of Melbourne. With her demon sword Amaya, who is becoming more like her and her more like the demon in the sword, she has a chance of success. Will it be enough? This series just keeps building, and just when you think it can't get any better, Keri Arthur pulls something out that will make you glad you took the time to read the book. I couldn't put it down, and I can't wait till June 4th for the next book to come out.
