I loved this book. Though it's a memoir, it isn't full of so much detail or uninteresting facts about the author's life that it loses you in personal anecdotes. It's well written, offering insight into an immigrant's struggles, and what it's like to live in Mexico, with your parents in the U.S., just hoping that sometime soon you may reunite and maybe get to the golden land you dream of. Beyond all that insight, though, it's just an interesting read and held me to the very end! A must read for everyone to better understand the Mexican immigration experience...Reyna Grande writes a heartbreaking, yet heartwarming memoir of her struggles to reunite with her parents in "El Otro Lado," the United States. The desperation with her family and yet hope for a better life is evident in her voice on every page. Her quest for a better education, especially found in the USA, is never ending. The battles that ensue to reach her dream are unforgettable. I am sure that many of my former ELD students have witnessed many such struggles in their own lives. Reyna's story would be an affirmation for them and an inspiration for any person. A 5 star read for sure!
