A expectativa em relação a este livro era enorme, pelas opiniões que tinha lido e ouvido. Na maioria das vezes não é bom partir para um livro com expectativas tão elevadas, porque a probabilidade de desilusão é maior. Neste caso, não posso dizer que fiquei desiludida, mas esperava que o livro me tivesse arrebatado mais. Um pouco como quando esperamos tirar um 20 num exame, mas afinal só conseguimos o 18.Neste romance histórico, acompanhamos a vida de Arnau Estanyol, desde as dificuldades na sua infância até ao sucesso obtido na idade adulta como cambista. Pelo meio, assistimos a várias peripécias da personagem principal, sempre com um denominador comum: a construção da igreja de Santa Maria del Mar. A ligação de Arnau com esta igreja marca boa parte do livro, tanto na sua condição de bastaixo (os homens que carregavam as pedras com que se construiu a igreja), como quando necessita de força para enfrentar as dificuldades que a vida lhe apresenta, apoiando-se sempre na única figura materna que conheceu - a Virgem Maria.A reconstituição histórica é sublime. A cidade de Barcelona ganha vida aos nossos olhos: a sua configuração, as suas gentes, os seus costumes. Gostei particularmente de tomar conhecimento da host de Barcelona: sempre que havia um cidadão de Barcelona a invocar que fosse feita justiça, as pessoas da cidade juntavam-se e iam em seu socorro. Para além disso, são dadas vastas explicações do contexto da época, desde as guerras entre os soberanos da Catalunha, Castela e Maiorca, ao estado da economia da época e das características comerciais da cidade. Está também presente uma interessante perspectiva sobre os tentáculos da Inquisição e sobre o fanatismo religioso que se vivia na altura, não só em Barcelona mas no resto da Europa. Por fim, entramos também em contacto com a terrível peste e as consequências nefastas que provocou.A espaços, recordei-me d'"Os Pilares da Terra", de Ken Follett, pela semelhança de ambos os livros versarem sobre a construção de uma catedral. Contudo, no livro de Ken Follett o próprio edifício tem um papel mais importante e, na minha opinião, Ildefonso Falcones escreve bem melhor: a sua escrita é envolvente e cuidada, e deixa muito boa impressão.Resumindo, é um excelente livro para quem gosta de romances históricos. A nível de enredo deixou-me um pouco a desejar, não porque seja mau, mas mais pelo rumo que por vezes desejamos que a história siga, quando no fim o autor opta por ir por outro caminho. Apesar disso, foi uma leitura muito boa, que não posso deixar de recomendar.
Vi ricordate di come è quando si passa un'intera notte cercando di ripassare centinaia di pagine di un libro di storia, rendendosi conto che c'è quell'argomento che non vi entra mai in testa, e sapete che, per quanto sappiate bene tutto il resto, vi chiederanno quello?Per molti, ricordo, era la questione d'oriente, quando spuntava nelle dieci pagine finali di un capitolo. Oppure l'America Latina. Per me era sempre stata la Penisola Iberica: che si trattasse di Medioevo, dell'epoca di Carlo V, del carlismo poco mi importava, arrancavo per ripetere quelle pagine senza mai ricordare nulla di concreto. E quando mi sono ritrovata davanti a tante pagine di storia sulla Catalogna... Beh, il terrore di quei giorni è tornato con forza.Non sono abituata a leggere romanzi storici, e se avessi voluto iniziare ad approcciarmi a questo genere riflettendoci un po', probabilmente avrei scelto qualcosa che non avesse niente a che vedere con la Catalogna. Una prima parte del romanzo mi è piaciuta molto, una seconda parte - carica di nozioni storiche, proprio quelle terribili e noiose guerre - l'ho detestata tanto da pensare di abbandonare la lettura. Eppure, nelle ultime 250 pagine, la mia opinione è cambiata totalmente: mi sono ritrovata ad adorare anche i personaggi che fino ad allora avevo ritenuto poco convincenti, ad apprezzare anche le parti storiche, a desiderare di essere lì a scrutare la facciata della cattedrale.Sono del parere che certi libri abbiano la capacità di dipingere nella nostra mente delle immagini che ci rimangono a lungo, sepolte da qualche parte, nascoste, e poi un ricordo, una cosa che vediamo o una cosa che ci viene detta le fa ritornare alla mente, non come pagine ma quasi come ricordi, come se appartenessero al nostro vissuto. E, allora, impieghiamo qualche secondo per renderci conto che, in realtà, non sono i nostri ricordi, ma un romanzo. "La cattedrale del mare" è quel tipo di romanzo, quello che dipinge immagini forti, che restano dentro, nel bene e nel male. Forse non il migliore romanzo per coloro che vogliono iniziare ad avvicinarsi ai romanzi storici o alla storia della Catalogna medievale, ma sicuramente da qualcosa si dovrà pur cominciare, no?
Do You like book La Catedral Del Mar (2006)?
Hefty historical novel set in fourteenth century Barcelona and revolving around the building of a cathedral (yes there are similarities to Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth). Unlike Follett’s novel this is very much woven around fact and an actual building and events and is based on a contemporary chronicle. It is well plotted, but there is a certain predictability about it. The topics you would expect to come across are there; the inquisition, the plague, relationships with Jews and Moors, the guild system, money lending, serfdom and slavery, nobility, daily life, relationships between the sexes and so on. It is a saga based on the main protagonist Arnau Estanyol, his parents, his adopted brother Joan and his subsequent life and relationships. All the boxes are ticked and this makes for the predictability. The novel is informative and as it is based on historical fact I did learn a good deal about the history of fourteenth century Barcelona. Some of the characterisation was a little contrived. In the first part of the book there were a few characters who were clearly in the way of where the plot was clearly headed and I thought to myself; “How is he going to dispose of them?” Along comes the plague, and of course, the characters in the way succumb, leaving the plot to roll along. The ending was also a little too cosy and predictable,This sounds like I’m being rather harsh; the plot does move along at a good pace and there is certainly warmth to it that is endearing. It isn’t taxing and would make a good beach read (If I was into beaches!).

I could not bring myself to give this two stars, meaning it was merely OK.The book was a best seller in Spain, with proclaiming Falcones Spain's answer to Dan Brown. (He is not that good - and not that bad either.) I can see why the book was so popular, for the author, A Catalan, wrote a historical novel of his city, Barcelona. This is something totally unthinkable 50 years ago, when the Franco regime forbade Catalan culture and language.Perhaps another reason for he book's popularity was its language. I perused the Spanish original and the style and vocabulary were simple and elementary. In short, it is "fast food" literature, accessible, filling, but hardly nutritious. (Not unlike Dan Brown.) One could almost call it a "beach book" or "airport book," but its sheer bulk make it less than handy and therefore unlikely.More substantively, the plot seethed with hokey melodrama (Spanish has a word for it: cursi) and the characters two dimensional, almost stereotypical.Falcones is an attorney in Barcelona, and he wrote this book over a period of years, an hour or so in the morning before going to work and an hour or so after work. It is also obvious he spent time in libraries as the plot is replete with minor heroes of Catalan history from the thirteenth-fourteenth century. Perhaps a movie will be made of it, dumbing it down even further, which can only ensure an even greater success. But it would have to be done the scale of a Cecil B. DeMille epic.I do not feel guilty leaving it unfinished.

I could not put it down... Even if the writing style of Ildefonso Falcones is not according to my taste, it grab me from the beginning! It is deeply moving historical novel with accurate history plot that spreads several decades of 14th century. Captivating, gripping story about friendship, freedom, passion, jealousy, greed, envy, feudal opression, religious persecution, pogroms against Jews, inquisition, war, plague, famine, prejudice, betrayal, revenge, about the pain of forbidden love, loyalty, honesty, devotion, the triumphs and consolation of a hero living in a cruel times! I hope that one day I will have the opportunity to visit Barcelona, city of my dreams, and Santa Maria del Mar, the cathedral built stone by stone, for the people and by the people!
