About book L' Homme à La Tête De Vis Et Autres Histoires Déjantées (2008)
The Amazing Screw-On Head is absurd, absurd in the most wonderful essence of the word. This is a project that you can tell Mike Mignola was having fun with. Something to play with, to play with and see what might happen. This book includes some extra drawings, but the fantastic addition is the story Mignola illustrated for his daughter. He didn't just illustrate a story for her, but he illustrated a story she wrote. She wrote it at the age of 7, but it doesn't have the feel of a grade school writing. I do not know if this is because of the illustration, or because I could see subtle brilliance behind the words, but I don't really have to answer the question, that's the beauty of being the reader. Being a reader we can bring forth ideas and conjecture, but we don't know what the writer thought at the moment of creation, not unless we ask them of course.This is a fun romp through an interesting world, one I really enjoyed taking. A bit "light" in my opinion - as far as the Mignola cannon... but it is a one-off. So it's not as deep or meaningful as the mythology twisting of the "Hellboy" world. But it's amusing, and beautiful. There's an odd take on "Jack and the Beanstalk" worked in. And the "Prisoner of Mars" was a rather more steampunky than the stupid "Corsets and Clockwork" YA 'steampunk' romance anthology I just read was. (But that's neither here nor there.)Guess there was a Sci-Fi channel (excuse me: SYFY) pilot made of this back in 2006. I haven't watched it yet, but it's interesting. Too bad it didn't get picked up. Ah well.
