About book Knocking On Heaven's Door: The Path To A Better Way Of Death (2013)

This book gives a very detailed account of the consequences of using a pacemaker to prolong the life of a dying man. While it was presumably ethically okay to turn off the pacemaker, they could not find anyone who would do it and the patient and his family suffered as a result. It will make you think about what you want to happen at the very end of your life, so it isn't a pleasant read but it may be a useful one. Helpful look at one daughter's struggle about when it's time to allow her father to die, following a couple of strokes, dementia, and installation of a pacemaker that's keeping him alive with poor quality of life. The frank talk and openness were candid, instructive and refreshing. The unhealthy drama between this 59 year-old woman and her mother were hard to read. Grow up, it's not all about you, and never has been. Drop all the buddhist bullshit and remember the fourth commandment: "Honor thy father and thy mother." I'll give the author points for frankness. Some of her behavior is not ideal, which she freely admits, but we can learn much from her thinking, her actions, and her research.
