Overall - I kinda liked it, no more, no less. Still the first book is a highlight of the series for me. I do enjoy the plot, but there has been an increasing number of inconsistencies and implausibilities that keep making me flinch. The timekeeping is sort of off, and characters make what can only be described as pointless travelling for a large part of the book. It's almost on the verge of becoming a comedy of mistakes where everyone misses everyone because of poorly motivated constant motion. For me the biggest problem is how Byren is handled. It feels like the author can't make up her mind whether he should be a hero, a tragic persona or just be killed off so he is doomed to travel the land fixing problems and making new ones...I'm also guessing the won't be the final installment of the series because like the third book it leaves a lot of open story lines, but no real cliffhangers. Which is nice enough, no one live a tease (we sometimes love them though), but still it leaves things at a low.On he other hand I still like the magic system, the premise of "the Kin" and the world received a much needed expansion as far as shear real estate goes. *Spoiler Free*King Breaker is the stunning conclusion to "The Chronicles of King Rolen's Kin" and although I was sad to see our adventures with this enthralling cast of characters come to an end, it is beautifully done.Daniells has a remarkable gift for captivating her audience right from the very first page and for being the cause of lost sleep. The hours will simply fly by and you will find yourself so immersed in the characters plight you almost expect to see your name on the page alongside theirs. If you have not as yet read any of the previous three instalments ("The King's Bastard", "The Uncrowned King" and "The Usurper")I implore you to please read them first. The back story does play an important part in setting the stage and the enjoyment level certainly would be nowhere near as high. This is one definitely one for all fantasy/epic adventure lovers. I dare you to enter Rolencia and not add Daniells to the top of the must have author list.

A good read but I thought the ending kind of sputtered out.
